My interview with Dara Torres!
Just Thinking...
Wednesday, 30 July 2008 03:09
I can't tell you how excited I am (I'm doing my happy dance right now) to actually interview for the second time the amazing and ageless Olympic gold medalist in swimming, Dara Torres.  She's been on the cover of USA Today, the New York Times, and Time magazine (and that's the short list) as well as all over the tv news, mainly because at 41, she's competing for the U.S. in her fifth Olympic competition, which is unprecedented in Olympic history.  And, everyone is expecting her to break more records and come home with the gold. In the midst of my other assignments for the October issue of Fitness Rx, my publisher decided that because Dara was making headlines everywhere, we should get a story on her for the next issue, which comes out in September, right in the wake of the Olympics.

He also mentioned in passing that her publicist indicated she was not giving any more interviews so good luck putting together a story.  Well, along with having interviewed her on the red carpet at the 2003 ESPYs for my radio show, I had written a story about Dara back in 2002 for Oxygen magazine.  In spite of several computer viruses destroying a lot of my old data, I managed to retrieve the info I had saved regarding her "people."  I called them, they put me in touch with the people working with her now and those people put me in touch with her.  Along with getting the latest scoop on her very high tech training I got a short interview (by email) with her.  (Thank you "people.").  Dara was already in Singapore training before she was to fly to Beijing, but she responded the very next day and answered all my questions.  This was just too good to be true!  So watch for the October issue of Fitness Rx for a very comprehensive look at how and why Dara is still swimming like she's 18.  And did I mention she had a baby two years ago and was back in the gym two weeks after giving birth?

Also, on the cover of the October issue is Shannon Bex, one of the singers in P.Diddy's all women's band, "Danity Kane."  Shannon is a sweetheart, and gave me the interview as she was riding in the limo coming from a concert they performed that evening in St. Louis.
